At Solterreno we are committed to reducing our use of energy.
The cabin is built of wood and has a 10cm cavity insulation filled with natural cork from trees in Castellon where i managed to buy directly from the man who harvests the cork. It needs very little heating in winter an NO air-condition is necessary in summer. The water heater is a new modern condenser gas boiler.
The meditation space is also built of wood and has a 10cm cavity insulation filled with natural cork. It needs very little heating in winter an NO air-condition is necessary in summer. It is east-south facing and the design takes advantage of the available solar passive
All windows are double glazed.
Heating: Where possible we use wood-burning stoves for heating (not in the wooden buildings) and we plan to install Solar water heaters.
We recycle glass, paper, wood, compost (for use on our veg garden).
Our water comes from the local public mains network here in La Vall de Laguar, of excellent quality.
We reuse greywater and use triple septic tanks to process our own wast.
We work with as many people as possible from the local community. Some of our therapist live in the nearby villages. Most of our building work has been done by local builders.
We have built a pond to encourage birds and frogs ect. We are in the process of planting more trees to enrich the variety and promote wildlife. We don't use pesticides. We leave some land wild to increase diversity and attract more wildlife.
To achieve sustainable building we need to consider the environmental impact of materials we're using to reduce energy consumption in the home. From using recycled materials to building with Straw Bale.
We buy some products from "Moviments" a local organic food community buying group, who also supply us with a range of cleaning products. We have our own veg garden which every summer produces a good percentage of our veg needs. We prepare balanced vegetarian meals using good quality produce.
